Volunteers Are the Backbone of the AuSable River Canoe Marathon
Without these fine folks, volunteers who are fans of this great race, the AuSable River Canoe Marathon would not exist! The Organizing Committee is made up of fan-volunteers who meet, plan & work year-round to stage this World Class Event. Many thousands of volunteer hours are annually devoted toward staging The Marathon by the Organizing Committee and hundreds of other volunteers.
During race week more than 200 individual volunteers contribute to the Marathon effort: Sale of Official Marathon Merchandise & raffle tickets; staging the Da$h For Ca$h and the Time Trials; serving as Official Timers of the race; assisting with public relations; putting up Marathon & sponsor signage; facilitating Amateur Radio Association communications during the Marathon; preparation of the start and finish areas; preparation of the hydro dam portage areas; transportation & set-up of light towers at the bridges and dams during the overnight portion of the race, among many other necessary tasks.
Thank you to all who participate to make this a World Class Event!
More volunteer support and participation in support of this great and growing event is needed and is always welcome. Thousands of volunteer hours are annually contributed by the committee members and other fans of The Marathon toward fulfilling the mission of the non-profit organizing committee – AuSable River International Canoe Marathon, Inc. – and staging this epic world class endurance event.
Planning and preparation for The Marathon goes on year-round. Review and wrap-up meetings are held within 30 days of the conclusion of each year’s Marathon and work toward staging the next year’s race begins immediately.
Volunteer committees in Grayling – the race start – and in Oscoda – the race finish – each meet monthly. There is also a monthly joint-meeting of Oscoda and Grayling volunteers.
As mentioned, more volunteer support and participation in support of this great and growing event is needed and is always welcome. The needs are many and varied, ranging from week- or day-of-the-race type jobs & logistical support, to on-going periodic year-round projects.
Volunteers do not necessarily need to regularly attend meetings. For example, there are some skill-needs that could be contributed by fans who do not even live close to the AuSable River Valley (e.g. – sponsor recruitment, e-commerce design & implementation, public relations, web & social media design & implementation, etc.).
In addition, please check this page from time to time. The Committee will be posting additional dates and times that Volunteers will be needed.
If you would like to volunteer, please contact the Organizing Committee either by email or by phone.
