Scholarship Fund

As part of an effort to be more proactive within our community the Marathon Committee created a scholarship fund in January 2017. Our goal is to award four scholarships each year as follows:

  1. Graduating senior from Crawford AuSable (Grayling) High School
  2. Graduating senior from Oscoda High School
  3. Graduating senior from Mio AuSable High School
  4. Marathon paddler who is currently pursuing a degree or enrolled in a trade school OR to the son, daughter or grandchild of a past Marathon paddler who is a graduating senior.

Academic performance will be considered; however, the primary selection criteria will be involvement in school and community activities. The amount granted will depend upon the success of the Committee’s fundraising activities but will be no less than $250.00 each.

The scholarship recipients will be announced during the Opening Program in Grayling and the Finish Line Awards Dinner in Oscoda. The recipient’s name and school attending will be printed in a congratulatory message in the Marathon Spectator Guide. Each recipient will also be invited to the Marathon VIP areas at the Start and Finish Line. Although not a condition of the scholarship, the committee kindly request the recipient offer to volunteer three hours of their time in some manner to assist with the Consumers Energy AuSable River Canoe Marathon.

Scholarship applications must include the following:

  1. Completed and signed application form
  2. A letter of recommendation from at least one of the following:
    • A staff member from your current high school
    • A past or current employer
    • The Director of a non-profit organization for which you have performed volunteer work within the past two years
  3. A brief discussion of the school activities and community service work you have performed during your high school career or in the past 4 years if you have already graduated

Applications must be mailed to the following address:

P.O. Box 652
Oscoda, MI  48750

Applications should not be submitted to your high school or a Marathon committee member.

Additional Details

The Committee agreed that no money from it’s general operating fund would be used to finance these scholarships. The Committee will solicit non-deductible donations and conduct various fundraisers to enable the awarding of four scholarships per year. These are some of the activities we have adopted to succeed in this process:

  1. “Coin Change Jars” in area businesses, such as:
    • Spike’s Keg-o-Nails (April through July)
    • Grayling 7-11 (July)
    • Moore’s Automotive (Marathon Week)
    • Grayling Restaurant (July)
    • Old Dam Party Store (July)
    • Dead Bear Brewing (May through July)
  2. 5% of net profit from annual Grayling Raffle on Race Day
  3. Direct solicitation via website, Facebook page, newspaper articles, etc.

Donations may be dropped off to John Cherven’s office in the Grayling Mini Mall, or mailed to:
