The AuSable River Canoe Marathon Committee invites our community to join us in the 2017 Pledge Relay fundraiser. We are a non-profit organization whose goal is to keep this historic race alive. Please come out to show your support of the 70th AuSable River Canoe Marathon. The relay begins at Penrod’s Canoe Livery at 9:00am. Participants will sign up to paddle any 1 of the 4 different sections of the river starting at Penrod’s and ending at McMasters Bridge (See the attached schedule). There will be a cookout to follow at John & Lexi Cherven’s cabin just upstream from McMasters Bridge for all participants. This is not a race, just a fun outing! A goal of $50.00 per person is encouraged; however, additional pledges are welcome. A $40.00 gift certificate (donated by the Grayling Mall) for the new restaurant at the Marathon start line will be awarded to the individual participant raising the most money in paid pledges.
Sign up as an individual participant ($50.00 goal), or organize a full canoe team (eight paddlers) for $300.00 or a full kayak team (four paddlers) for $150.00. All monies raised will go to the general operating budget for the 2017 Marathon. The Committee welcomes our Marathon sponsors to join in on the fun!

Preliminary Details for New Event to be Held in Conjunction With The AuSable River Canoe Marathon Pledge Relay Saturday May 20, 2017.
The Pledge Relay is a fundraiser coordinated by the Marathon Committee and involves volunteer paddlers. The event will begin at 9:00 AM at Penrod’s Canoe Livery in Grayling and will end at McMasters Bridge approximately 2:00 PM. Last year’s event raised over $1,000 for the Marathon, and this year’s goal is much higher. The Committee expects promotional support from various media entities including, but not limited to, the Crawford County Avalanche newspaper and WUPS radio station. The Committee hopes to include some local celebrity paddlers this year.
An exciting new feature to the 2017 Relay will be the introduction of the First Annual Canoe Challenge. This event will involve (4) four prominent Grayling area Marathon Paddlers. Preliminary commitments have been obtained from Jeff Kolka, Bill Torongo, Sean Casey, and Colin Hunter. Jeff and Bill will race an aluminum canoe from Wakeley Bridge to McMasters Bridge. Sean Casey and Colin Hunter will paddle a traditional racing canoe from Stephan Bridge to McMasters Bridge and will attempt to arrive ahead of Jeff and Bill. A start time interval will be determined with the assistance of Marathon paddler Eric Batway by means of several practice runs in an aluminum canoe with others in the month leading up to the event. It is assumed the aluminum canoe will have the advantage in a race of this short distance, so a time handicap will be applied to ensure as close a finish as possible.
