60^th Weyerhaeuser AuSable River Canoe Marathon

64 Teams Entered as of June 27, 2007

June 27, 2007-Grayling MI

     With a little over a month to go until the start of the 60^th Weyerhaeuser AuSable River Canoe Marathon, sixty-four two-person teams have signed up to participate in the race. Long time race organizer Joe Wakeley believes the 2007 race will have the largest starting field ever “Being the 60^th race and having 64 teams entered already, we could pass the 68 teams that started the race in 2000.”

One thing for sure is going to happen at the end of the 60^th running of the Weyerhaeuser AuSable Canoe Marathon; there will be a new champion crowned. Since 2003, no team has repeated as back to back champions. Last years winners, Allen Limburg of Wausau Wisconsin and partner Jim Harwood of Grayling will not be back to defend their title. Harwood has relocated to Colorado and Limburg is paddling with Barb Bradley. Among the teams expected to challenge to add a marathon championship to their resume are: past champion Andrew Triebold of Spring Arbor, MI and partner Matt Rimer of Grayling, MI, brothers Rodney and Ryan Halstead (2006 runners up), Bill Torongo of Roscommon, MI and partner Calvin Hassel of Grand Island, Nebraska, Matt Streib of Bristol, Indiana and partner Steve Corlew of Grayling, MI and John Sullivan of Grayling, MI and partner Ted Kolka of Grayling, MI just to name a few.

Other notables entered in the 2007 race.

Back again for his 35^th marathon start is 82 year old Al Widing Sr. of Mio, MI. This year he has partnered with Sean Casey of Grayling, MI.

Lynne Witte of Mt. Clemens, MI has entered her 28^th Canoe Marathon with partner Connie Cannon of East Lansing, MI.

ReJean Huard, director of La Classique Canoe Race held in Shawinigan Quebec Canada has entered with partner Grant Tally of Flat Rock, MI.
