60th Weyerhaeuser AuSable River Canoe Marathon

 

June 26, 2007-Grayling MI

    

      “60” is a milestone most of us will probably meet with some apprehension, however in Grayling Michigan it is a cause to celebrate. The Weyerhaeuser AuSable River Canoe Marathon celebrates its’ 60th anniversary on July 28, 2007.  The Weyerhaeuser Au Sable River Canoe Marathon is widely recognized as the “Longest, Richest and Toughest Canoe Race in North America”. Competitors paddle an average of fifty paddle strokes per minute to finish this grueling race. The race course runs from Grayling to Oscoda Michigan, covering over 120 miles of the world famous AuSable River.

 

   Here are some quick facts about some of this year’s competitors.

1.      Currently, 64 (sixty four) two person teams have signed up for the 60th event, thirty of the entrants are first time racers of “The Marathon”.

2.      Eight teams are “mixed” co-ed teams.

3.      Two all female teams have entered

4.      Canada and Belize will have paddlers in the 60th event

5.      Sixteen states will have representation including: Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maine Massachusetts, Michigan Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin

6.      The oldest entry is Al Widing Sr. 82 of Mio, MI (partnering with Sean Casey) and the youngest is Josh Moggo 15, of Grayling, MI (paddling with his dad Doug Moggo)

7.      Thirteen teams are family members who are racing together.
