Michigan Duo wins the Spike’s Challenge Canoe Race by
Slim Margin
Grayling Michigan-
A record number of teams
entered the Spike’s Challenge Canoe Race held Sunday July 23, 2006 in
Grayling, Michigan. Sixty-
Five teams entered the race, sixty-two of the teams finished and when it was
all said and done the margin of victory for the winning team was two seconds. Andy Triebold (tree-bold) of Spring Arbor, Michigan and
Matt Rimer (ry-mer) of Grayling, Michigan won
the race with a time of
2:38:46 (two
hours, thirty eight minutes and forty six seconds). Finishing second was the
team of Mo Harwood of Grayling, Michigan and Steve Lajoie
(laj-wah) of Mirabel, Quebec with a
time of 2:38:48 (two
hours, thirty-eight minutes and forty eight seconds). The Spike’s Challenge
Canoe Race features the upper section of the Au Sable River, giving paddlers a
day light glimpse at what they can expect in the upcoming Weyerhaeuser Au Sable
River Canoe Marathon Saturday
July 29, 2006.
Early on Ryan and Rod Halstead
of Grayling, Michigan led
the race closely followed by Triebold/Rimer and Harwood/Lajoie, the top three
teams were no more than ten seconds apart through three timing locations. In
the end Triebold/Rimer edged out Harwood/Lajoie in a sprint
to the finish line at McMaster’s Bridge.
Finishing third was Ryan and
Rod Halstead of Grayling, Michigan with a
time of 2:42:05 (two
hours, forty-two minutes and five seconds). Placing fourth was the team of Jim
Harwood of Grayling, Michigan and Al
Limberg of Wausau, Wisconsin with a
time of 2:44:29 (two
hours, forty four minutes and twenty-nine seconds). Rounding out the top ten
were in 5th place Brad Gross (Pinconning, MI) and Josh Sheldon
(Grayling, MI), 6th place Pete Mead (Traverse City, MI) and Mitch
McMillan (Clare, MI), 7th place Tad Hill (Livonia, MI) and Efrain
Cruz (Belize City, Belize), 8th place Josh Taylor (Grayling, MI) and
Jason Hall (Crystal, MI), 9th place Russ Reker (Lapeer, MI) and Al
Widing, Jr. (Fenton, MI) and 10th place the father and son team of
Ray Trudgeon (East Lansing, MI) and Tom Trudgeon (Grayling, MI).
