The Amateur Radio Association of Hanson Hills The Amateur Radio Association of Hanson Hills in conjunction with Iosco ARES/RACES will be providing AuSable River Canoe Marathon Race communications for the 15th consecutive year. Radio operators stationed at each of the 14 bridge and dam locations and the finish line, relay position and timing information on each canoe team to race headquarters in Grayling. All communications this year will be transmitted through the K5EKP Repeater located in Mio, MI. This 2 Meter Repeater is on a frequency of 147.14 Mhz. Our thanks go to Bill Gilbert for providing such a superb Amateur Radio Resource.
Two Amateur Radio Operators are located at each timing location. The first operator is with the official timers. This operator uses a hand held two meter radio to communicate to their partner stationed in a mobile unit at the adjacent highway location. Timing and position information for each canoe is relayed from the timing point to the mobile unit and then to race headquarters in Grayling. At race headquarters the received data is entered into a computer where elapsed and split times are calculated and immediately updated to this website for each of the 15 timing locations. Times are also compared to previous course records and provided to the media for commercial broadcast.
The ARAHH provides public service communications for such events as the Canoe Marathon, The Hartwick Pines Challenge, a 7.2 mile running race, the Michigan Cup Marathon and Classic Cross Country Ski Races and the Hanson Hills Challenge running races. In addition, Amateur Radio operators provide communication for the additional races during the week prior to the Marathon and the Sprint Races which determine the Marathon Participants starting position.
Marathon Race Headquarters is located in the Grayling Mini Mall and remains open throughout the night of July 28 until the race is completed on the afternoon of the 29th. Visitors are welcome, or you may call 989-348-4425 for updates or check this Internet site as the race progresses.
Additional information on the ARAHH follows.
